Floor Sanding

AABLE WOODEN FLOORS have been renovating and refinishing old timber floors since 1989. We have considerable experience in this area and have spent the last few years sourcing the best available equipment and finishing products. Our subsequent investment in technology ensures that we are leading the marketplace in the quality and standard of work we produce. We are one of the few companies in Scotland offering a true DUST FREE service, something that is not normally associated with floor sanding !

We take great care with the preparation of each floor, and where necessary if repairs are required, this is done skilfully, with a view to retaining the patina of the original wood. Due to the power of our sanding equipment no floor is beyond transformation. Whether they are coated in paint, have old shellac borders or cupped or crowned severely, this offers us no problem. Look at the "before & after" link for some examples.

With regard to finishing re-sanded floors there are many different products available. The products we most commonly use are :

  • Swedish finish :    This is an advanced two-component acid catalyst lacquer which has been specially formulated for professional use on floors which will be subjected to light industrial traffic. It has a high build, is fast drying, and has a natural clear finish suitable for new and fully stripped wooden floors.

  • Polyacrylic :    This blend of synthetic resins, plasticizers and other film-forming ingredients (water based) that produces an extremely durable surface that is moisture resistant. Different gloss levels are available, with most having a clear finish. The drying time is much faster than oil-based urethanes (one to two hours), and there is little odour. The application however can be difficult, if inexperienced, due to its quick drying time.

  • Moisture Cured :    A solvent-base urethane lacquer with one of the hardest finishes available. Moisture cured urethane dries by pulling moisture from the air, while most other finishes dry through evaporation of the solvents leaving the resins on the floor. It is non-yellowing and is available in satin or gloss. This is an extremely difficult finish to apply, it has a strong odour and is best left to the professional.

If you have a wooden floor that requires re-finishing or have old Pine floorboards that you would like sanded and finished please contact us via the feedback page for more information.
